Position Summary: We are looking for a full-time Environmental Modeling Analyst to join our dynamic team at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) within the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC). This role is integral to the Verification team, focusing on the evaluation and enhancement of the Global Forecast System (GFS).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive verification, validation, and evaluation studies of the GFS, employing advanced scientific analysis techniques.
  • Develop innovative methods and tools for assessing global model outputs using the EMC Verification System (EVS).
  • Analyze the long-term performance of various GFS versions through objective methodologies.
  • Collaborate with forecasters and scientists to communicate model biases and improvements.
  • Maintain a detailed archive of global model data and observations.
  • Provide support in the creation of model verification graphics for online dissemination.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess at least a Master’s degree in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, mathematics, or a related physical science, along with a minimum of two years of experience in analyzing or modeling Earth System Models (ESMs).

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient in verification techniques for ensemble and deterministic ESMs.
  • Extensive experience with the Python programming language in high-performance computing environments.
  • Familiarity with FORTRAN and graphical display tools such as GRADS, GEMPAK, and MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of meteorological data formats, including GRIB2 and NetCDF.
  • Experience with model verification software systems, particularly Model Evaluation Tools (METplus).
