Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled Automation Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team at Codeworks IT Careers. This role offers an opportunity to work with a highly regarded organization known for its commitment to excellence and innovation. The position will operate in a hybrid model, requiring both onsite and remote collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement advanced automated and semi-automated control systems, applying robust engineering principles and cutting-edge technologies.
  2. Develop PLC programming that interfaces with various subsystems, including conveyors, robotics, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), machine vision, and third-party equipment.
  3. Conduct research and development on emerging technologies to address complex automation challenges that directly influence product quality and delivery timelines.
  4. Evaluate existing control systems through risk assessments, formulate remediation strategies, and execute upgrades as per established plans.
  5. Utilize leadership abilities to guide and mentor automation suppliers, spearhead internal projects, and serve as a technical resource for engineering teams and project leaders, all while promoting standards and process enhancements.

Essential Duties:

  • Enhance processes through the application of both theoretical knowledge and practical engineering skills.
  • Establish factory-level and machine-level control standards and specifications for use by internal development teams and external partners.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for control systems programming, including the architecture, coding, and debugging of PLC ladder logic and IPC software, ensuring the code is well-organized, documented, and maintainable.
  • Implement safety systems compliant with ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA standards to protect high-volume manufacturing equipment.
  • Create user-friendly HMI interfaces for complex machinery, ensuring adequate feedback for troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with IT to integrate manufacturing assets into the enterprise network, adhering to established standards and guidelines.
  • Stay informed about significant technical trends and developments, incorporating relevant advancements into your work.
  • Prepare Requests for Quotation/Proposal (RFQ/RFPs), coordinate cross-functional reviews of machine requirements, and engage with machine suppliers for automated equipment design assessments.
  • Travel to supplier locations for equipment qualification, acceptance testing, and support during build events.
  • Occasional travel to client sites for support as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Over 7 years of experience with Rockwell Logix systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in designing, programming, integrating, and validating control systems for high-volume automated processes in discrete manufacturing environments.
  • Proficient in designing control hardware and operational technology infrastructures, with a solid understanding of industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience in drafting technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment and conducting design of experiments and failure analysis.
  • Expertise in designing machine safety circuits and programming safety PLCs.
  • Familiarity with software and SCADA platforms that support Industry 4.0 initiatives, including historians and OPC servers.
  • Experience with machine integration into common IoT platforms.
  • Knowledge of SQL and programming languages such as Python or Java is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills suitable for a global environment.
  • Prior experience with ERP systems such as SAP is beneficial.
  • Experience with Fanuc robotics is a plus.
