Role Summary:

The Chicago Botanic Garden is seeking an Aquaponics Coordinator to enhance our agricultural workforce development initiatives. This position will collaborate with team members to facilitate production operations and educational programs within Windy City Harvest. The selected candidate will engage in the daily management and production of a substantial aquaponics system primarily focused on lettuce and indoor vegetable cultivation.

Key Responsibilities:

As an Aquaponics Coordinator, your duties will include:

  • Developing and executing an annual crop strategy.
  • Aiming to achieve production targets outlined in the crop strategy.
  • Overseeing the propagation of seedlings and the transition from nursery to main system.
  • Adhering to the production timetable to ensure system consistency.
  • Conducting weekly harvests and processing produce in line with post-harvest protocols.
  • Maintaining precise records related to harvests, food safety, and sales, with regular reporting to the production team.
  • Keeping detailed logs for integrated pest management, food safety, water quality testing, and other agricultural inputs.
  • Forecasting and communicating harvest availability to the Windy City Harvest team.
  • Assisting with aquaculture harvests.
  • Performing general system maintenance and cleaning.
  • Training and managing participants in the workforce development program.
  • Overseeing site supplies and equipment inventory.
  • Monitoring expenses to stay within budget and maintaining receipt documentation.
  • Leading scheduled and spontaneous site tours for visitors.
  • Serving as a resource for program information for partners, community members, and garden staff.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in aquaponics or hydroponics.
  • A Produce Safety Alliance Grower Certificate is preferred.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse production and operations.
  • Dependability, responsibility, and the ability to work independently.
  • A strong commitment to the mission of Windy City Harvest.
  • Experience in hydroponics, aquaponics, and organic vegetable production.
  • Experience in public garden settings and leading tours is preferred.
  • Familiarity with edible landscaping, vermicomposting, beekeeping, and fruit production is advantageous.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Detail-oriented, flexible, and punctual work ethic.
  • Experience adhering to best practices for food safety and post-harvest handling.
  • Effective communication skills across various platforms.

Physical Requirements:

This role involves working in an urban farm environment, requiring the ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions. Candidates should be prepared for frequent lifting, standing, walking, and operating farm tools and machinery, as well as engaging with the public and program participants.
