Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head Start Assistant Teacher/Driver to join our team at Siletz Tribal Gaming Comm. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the planning and execution of a developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant preschool program, as well as providing safe and efficient transportation services to children.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with planning and execution of daily educational activities and provide a safe and efficient transportation service to 20 children.
  • Follow through on daily educational plans within the classroom and plan activities that promote school readiness skills.
  • Set up and maintain a developmentally appropriate classroom environment, including organization of space and material storage.
  • Set up educational and/or social service related home visits with assigned families.
  • Plan and deliver daily lesson plans that meet the needs of the children.
  • Deliver food service and eat with the children.
  • Perform daily cleaning and classroom preparation duties.
  • Complete required documentation and follow up activities.
  • Work in a team setting with other staff to assess the needs of families and children.
  • Participate in Child Development Associates (CDA) program and/or other training activities.
  • Support the Head Start goals, objectives, and performance standards.
  • Develop and drive a bus route, implement a daily bus route, and transport children for program-related activities.
  • Ensure the bus is operated in a safe and efficient manner, and complete necessary upkeep, maintenance, and safety checks.
  • Responsible for the behavior of children on the bus, with particular attention to safety.
  • Keep assigned vehicle clean and report any accidents or malfunctions to the Head Start Manager.
  • Record gas slips and report on in-kind services.
Requirements
  • Associates or bachelor's degree (any field) or High School Diploma or GED and six months experience in a structured early childhood education setting.
  • Must obtain Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within 2 years of hire date.
  • Must obtain valid Oregon School Bus Drivers Certificate and Oregon Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with the proper endorsements, or CDL Permit and be able to obtain a valid Oregon Commercial Drivers License (within 90-days of employment) with the proper endorsements.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check, including a sex offender registry check, and obtain one of the following through the Central Background Registry: State or tribal criminal history records, including fingerprints; or, Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history records, including fingerprints; and Child abuse and neglect state registry check, if available.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Positive methods of child guidance, including redirection, consistency, and prevention.
  • Developmentally appropriate practices for early childhood.
  • Basic understanding of child development.
  • Ability to work effectively with low-income families, use a positive approach in directing child behavior, and work cooperatively with other program staff.
  • Ability to be comfortable working with children and families from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the classroom environment and to facilitate and support the physical activity of 20 young children.
Other Requirements
  • Obtain Food Handler's card within 15-days of hire.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR within first 30-days of hire.
  • Screened for tuberculosis.
  • Tolerant and sensitive when working with children and families.
