About the Role

Carnegie Mellon University's Facilities Management department is seeking a skilled Mason to join our team. As a Mason, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the installation and repair of masonry structures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Laying out patterns and building forms for curbs, walkways, steps, memorial plaques, and concrete repairs.
  • Cutting and trimming materials using power tools or hand tools to fit around windows and doors.
  • Tearing down old masonry structures and replacing them with new ones.
  • Safely cutting openings and supporting walls to prepare for new building materials, such as door frames and windows into an existing structure.
  • Repointing and restoring damaged masonry on walls and chimneys.
  • Texturizing, polishing, and sealing all bricks and natural stone to ensure surfaces are waterproof and damp-proof.
  • Cleaning masonry and removing graffiti from concrete, brick, and other natural stone surfaces using a variety of techniques.
  • Reading blueprints and technical drawings to calculate materials and create detailed plans.
  • Requisitioning job parts and supplies.
Requirements
  • High School diploma, GED, or trade-specific training through trade school, apprenticeship, or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a journeyman required, with experience in a large institutional (college, university, hospital, etc.) setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of installation and repair of plaster, stucco, ceramic tile preferred.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced environment and will be expected to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead. The candidate will also be required to work outside during inclement weather conditions.
