Job Opportunity for a Dedicated Professional

We are seeking an exceptional Lead Spoken Language Specialist to join our team at Clarke Schools for Hearing & Speech in New York City.

About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and experienced educator to lead our efforts in teaching children who are deaf or hard of hearing, providing them with the listening, learning, and spoken language skills they need to succeed. As a member of our team, you will be working closely with colleagues, parents, and caregivers to create a supportive environment that fosters growth and development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to each child's needs, incorporating IEP goals, CASLLS, ELCC, and curriculum-aligned practices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for attendance, parental communication, IEP progress, health, and safety records.
  • Supervise children throughout the day, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being.
  • Record, transcribe, and analyze language samples to inform instruction and support individualized learning plans.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create curriculum that reflects child development principles and maximizes opportunities for listening and spoken language development.
  • Facilitate seamless communication between classroom activities and individual speech-language sessions, promoting carryover and reinforcement of learning objectives.
  • Engage children in auditory and spoken language development activities, both individually and in small groups.
  • Promote a welcoming school community by creating a comfortable and supportive environment for parents and caregivers.
  • Directly supervise teacher assistants and perform additional tasks as assigned by the director to ensure the smooth functioning of the school.
Meetings and Planning:
  • Participate in educational team meetings to discuss children's progress and plan effective strategies for their success.
  • Attend staff meetings on a weekly basis to stay informed about school-wide initiatives and policies.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, CASSLS conferences, and parent workshops or events as needed.
Written Plans and Reports:
  • Create written plans that align with NYS Learning Standards and IEP goals, reflecting the unique needs and abilities of each child.
  • Communicate effectively with parents through various channels, including communication notebooks and the school blog.
  • Prepare comprehensive progress reports and IEP proposals that highlight student achievements and areas for growth.
  • Daily assess student progress, making adjustments to instruction as needed to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Promote Clarke Schools' mission and goals, embodying the organization's commitment to excellence in education.

Requirements:

  • NYS certification in Deaf/HH Education or Master's degree; NYS certification in a related area (Early Childhood Education, TSSLD, Early Childhood Special Education) preferred.
  • Experience and commitment to the listening and spoken language approach to education of deaf and hard of hearing children required.
  • LSL Cert AVT or AVEd certification or willingness to pursue.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Salary: $65,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience.
