Role Overview
As a vital member of our research team, you will conduct in-depth analyses to support advocacy initiatives related to science and democracy across various sectors, including science policy, regulatory frameworks, and the integrity of scientific research. You will collaborate closely with campaign teams to achieve strategic policy objectives and serve as a knowledgeable spokesperson on technical and policy matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on science policy, regulatory matters, and the defense of scientific integrity. Monitor trends and emerging issues to provide actionable insights and policy recommendations for decision-makers.
- Draft and refine research reports, policy briefs, articles, and visual data representations to effectively communicate findings and recommendations.
- Collaborate with CSD staff on various research-related projects, including media responses, report production, and public messaging strategies.
- Advocate for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in all research endeavors and support the organization's commitment to anti-racism.
Expertise and Collaboration
- Demonstrate the ability to distill complex research findings into clear, accessible conclusions for diverse audiences, including the media and policymakers.
- Respond to inquiries from various stakeholders, including researchers, advocates, and the public regarding CSD-related issues.
- Participate in relevant conferences, briefings, and training sessions to enhance knowledge and networking.
Support for Program Development
- Assist in the development of program and campaign strategies by identifying key stakeholders and research opportunities.
- Represent UCS in collaborative meetings and foster relationships with external partners to explore collaborative opportunities.
Additional Responsibilities
- Up to 20% of the role may involve tasks not explicitly outlined, reflecting temporary assignments or professional development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Master's degree or Juris Doctor in a relevant field such as science policy, public policy, or social sciences.
- 5-7 years of relevant experience in policy analysis and advocacy, with a focus on democracy reform preferred.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a dynamic research environment.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in mixed methods research and public information laws.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information to a general audience.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and engage with diverse cultural perspectives.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to remain stationary for extended periods and operate a computer.
- Occasional travel (10-15%) for meetings and events may be required.
