JOB SUMMARY

The Central Sterile Supply Technician is responsible for receiving, disassembling, and inspecting reusable medical devices and surgical instruments for any damage, as well as preparing and sterilizing medical equipment to ensure safety and efficacy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the receipt and disposal of regulated medical waste, general waste, and soiled linen.
  • Adhere to OSHA regulations by wearing personal protective equipment at all times in the decontamination area.
  • Identify the appropriate decontamination methods, including the removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants, utilizing techniques such as wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and operating ultrasonic and washer decontamination/sterilizer equipment.
  • Conduct thorough examinations of all items post-decontamination/pre-sterilization to confirm the removal of contaminants and the proper functioning of instruments.
  • Ensure proper labeling and identification of all medical devices and surgical instruments.
  • Assemble and prepare a comprehensive range of specialty trays and instrument sets, selecting the correct wrapping or packaging materials and sterilization processes according to established procedures, including Ethylene Oxide (ETO) or Steam Sterilization.
  • Receive sterilized trays, sets, and equipment from the sterilizer, verifying the integrity of sterilization through color changes on indicator tapes and checking for moisture, then stock and store sterile items appropriately.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY ROLE

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a central sterile supply training program or equivalent military training.
  • Current certification from the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management or the National Institute of Health Care Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.
  • Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Red Cross, which must remain current.
  • Compliance with the site's health screening and immunization requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary security access and background checks.
  • Fulfillment of all required documentation, certifications, and licenses as specified in the credentialing checklist for initial hire.

  • Strong written communication skills for accurate documentation.
  • Capability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of individuals.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a full-time position, with the possibility of additional hours as needed to complete assignments or projects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is primarily conducted indoors in a well-lit military treatment facility, such as a clinic or hospital. The environment is typically air-conditioned, though conditions may vary. The role may require quick thinking and rapid decision-making in a fast-paced setting, with exposure to a variety of clients and potential health risks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position involves prolonged periods of sitting, using hands and fingers, and handling materials. It may also require walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Pay rate: $34.06 per hour.
