The State of Montana is seeking a dedicated Roadway Maintenance Specialist. This role encompasses a range of responsibilities including labor, leadership, equipment operation, and transportation duties essential for maintaining highway infrastructure. The specialist will utilize various machinery, including trucks, to conduct routine maintenance tasks such as ditch cleaning, surface patching, fence repairs, lawn care, and the movement of materials or equipment. During winter months, the role involves loading sanding materials and performing snow removal operations.

  • Operate and maintain machinery, ensuring proper functionality through pre-operational checks, scheduled servicing, and necessary repairs.
  • Engage in diverse maintenance activities to uphold highway safety and functionality.
  • Perform additional related tasks as required to support the department's objectives.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience: Candidates should possess knowledge of highway maintenance practices and the operation of related equipment, including basic maintenance of diesel and gasoline vehicles:

• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in driving heavy trucks and operating construction machinery, alongside basic skills in mathematics, computer usage, and record keeping.

• A valid Montana Class A Type II Commercial Operator's license with endorsements for air brakes and tanker is required. Applicants with a Class B license or a learner's permit with relevant experience are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates with a learner's permit must obtain a Class A, Type II CDL license with endorsements within 30 days of hire.

• Candidates must reside or be willing to relocate within a specified distance of the assigned maintenance section and maintain accessibility to the section headquarters.
