Position Overview:

This role is integral to the mission and operations of the Y, a prominent nonprofit organization. The After School Program Educator at the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA provides direct oversight and leadership to a group of children in an after-school program, fostering self-esteem, encouraging independence, and respecting individuality. The Educator is tasked with creating a program that nurtures children's social, physical, spiritual, and mental development, ensuring the well-being of each participant in alignment with established guidelines and policies.

The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Exemplifying the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in interactions with members, colleagues, guests, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels; facilitating connections among participants and families, and promoting family engagement.
  • Assisting the Head Educator and Directors in planning and executing program activities, ensuring alignment with YMCA guidelines and supporting participants in achieving their objectives.
  • Communicating effectively and proactively with supervisors, staff, program participants, and parents.
  • Ensuring cleanliness and safety of program areas and equipment.
  • Maintaining a vigilant presence, remaining alert while on duty, and actively engaging in all program activities.
  • Familiarizing oneself with emergency procedures and responding promptly to emergencies in accordance with established policies.
  • Enforcing all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including those aimed at preventing child abuse.
  • Promoting all YMCA programs, particularly Child Care initiatives, to foster loyalty among those we serve.
  • Adhering to Child Care procedures and guidelines regarding health and safety, supervision, discipline, attendance, and reporting.
  • Participating in all required meetings and training sessions.

Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess one of the following:
    • A high school diploma or equivalent, or
    • A minimum of 540 hours of documented experience working with children of similar ages.
  • Must provide documentation of a physical examination and TB test upon hire, to be renewed every two years.
  • Must submit background check and fingerprinting forms within 30 days of hire.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and assist in educational activities.
  • Exemplary role model with integrity and adaptability.
  • Ability to remain calm and objective under pressure.
  • Effective communication skills for informing, counseling, and motivating members.
  • Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to respond calmly in emergencies.
  • Availability to work flexible schedules.
Training & Certifications:
  • Completion of New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Mandated Reporter, Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety, and Hazard Communication trainings prior to starting the position.
  • CPR/First Aid certification for Child Care must be obtained within six months of hire and maintained.
  • Administration of Medications certification is preferred.
  • Ongoing professional development as required by licensing standards and YMCA training.
