This role is situated within one of the various facilities operated by the Indian Health Service. The primary objective of this position is to act as a technical authority in the field of General Surgery; the individual will be responsible for the assessment, management, and treatment of patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts patient interviews and examinations, reviews medical histories, and orders or performs necessary diagnostic tests to gather comprehensive information for each case.
  • Formulates initial diagnoses, directs, prescribes, or administers treatment, or coordinates specialized care in the domain of General Surgery or patient referrals as needed.
  • Provides urgent and emergency medical care as required.
  • Refers patients to suitable contract medical or other governmental facilities.
  • Responds to acute medical emergencies, collaborating closely with other medical department members.
  • Acts as a specialist in the field and undertakes relevant administrative responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Qualifications:
Education: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been recognized by relevant medical education accreditation bodies at the time of attainment.

Licensure: All applicants must hold a current, active, full, and unrestricted medical license or registration as a Physician from a recognized jurisdiction.

Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited hospital or institution. Recognized training programs include internship, residency, and fellowship programs accredited by appropriate bodies.

Additional Requirements for Higher Grades

GS-15: A minimum of five years of graduate training in the medical specialty relevant to this position or equivalent experience demonstrating the ability to provide high-level patient care.

  • Board Certification: Preferred but not mandatory.
