Position Overview

The Adolescent Support Program Advisor plays a crucial role in providing both individual and group guidance, educational resources, and referral services to young individuals and their families involved in a school-based initiative aimed at preventing substance misuse and promoting early intervention strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive interviews and evaluations of students and their families in various settings, utilizing advanced diagnostic skills and therapeutic techniques.
  • Determine the appropriateness of services provided by the Adolescent Support Program Advisor and refer clients to external agencies as necessary based on the specific challenges faced.
  • Track, assess, and document client progress in relation to established treatment objectives.
  • Collaborate with educational staff and community professionals to discuss and recommend appropriate diagnoses and treatment plans for clients.
  • Serve as a mental health and substance misuse consultant for educational personnel, offering guidance as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate educational workshops, programs, and outreach activities for students, school staff, parents, and community organizations to raise awareness about available services and promote prevention efforts.
  • Maintain accurate and timely written and electronic case records in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Collect and analyze outcome data, preparing monthly and quarterly reports as required by funding agencies.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training initiatives.
  • Participate in regular peer consultation meetings.
  • Attend school events such as open houses and performances to foster community engagement.

Educational Qualifications

Candidates must possess a master's degree in social work, counseling, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. A valid New York State license is required, with CASAC certification preferred.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of one year of post-master's professional experience in mental health or substance misuse counseling, specifically working with adolescents aged 12 to 21, is required.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient in counseling principles, practices, and clinical techniques, particularly related to substance misuse.
  • Understanding of adolescent development, behaviors, and related treatment methodologies.
  • Familiarity with services offered by community mental health and substance misuse clinics.
  • Knowledge of public and private community agency services tailored for adolescents.
  • Insight into the public education system.
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with colleagues, clients, families, and community service providers.
  • Competence in preparing detailed and timely case records and making informed decisions based on analyzed information.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of background checks as mandated by relevant authorities.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Independent auto insurance with specified liability limits.
  • Flexibility to work between 35 and 40 hours per week, as required by job responsibilities.
