Our expanding collection features diverse artworks from various cultures, eras, and forms, including paintings, sculptures, photography, comic art, and filmmaking. Founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, and directed by Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the museum is being constructed in Los Angeles's Exposition Park, designed by the acclaimed architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects.

The museum's 11-acre campus will include extensive green spaces and a 300,000-square-foot building housing expansive galleries, state-of-the-art theaters, and spaces dedicated to learning, engagement, dining, and events.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Art Collections Research Associate is an integral part of the curatorial team at the Lucas Museum, responsible for conducting comprehensive research and providing organizational support for collection management and exhibition planning.

This role is essential for in-depth object research, historical analysis, and cataloging within the museum's collections, as well as contributing to specific curatorial projects, including exhibitions and acquisitions.

Under the guidance of the Curatorial department, the Art Collections Research Associate will work both independently and collaboratively with museum staff to fulfill the essential functions of the curatorial team.

The ideal candidate will leverage advanced research methodologies and possess strong writing skills to produce research-based content on collection items, which may be utilized for various purposes, including object files, educational materials, publications, and gallery interpretation.

This position will involve cataloging findings using The Museum System (TMS) and providing additional administrative support, including the preparation of documents and project budgets.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct research for exhibitions, curatorial initiatives, and publications related to the museum's collections.
  • Exercise independent judgment while performing archival research in various repositories to inform the Curatorial Department.
  • Utilize expertise in art history to perform detailed object research, including cultural context, materials, and provenance.
  • Compile and expand artist and object information for research files, including biographical details and publication records.
  • Manage data entry and organization within The Museum System (TMS) to maintain accurate records.
  • Act as a liaison between the museum and external experts regarding artist research and specific artworks.
  • Draft informative texts on collection items and loans for diverse content needs.
  • Organize and maintain research files to support curatorial recommendations.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborative sessions with project committees.
  • Assist in the logistical and administrative aspects of exhibition development.
  • Support catalogue research and curatorial planning initiatives.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to ensure the successful realization of curatorial objectives.
  • Engage with external consultants and scholars on collection-related projects.
  • Travel as necessary for research purposes related to exhibitions and collections.
  • Undertake special projects and additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in history, art history, media studies, or a related field is required; Ph.D. preferred. A minimum of three years of experience in a museum or arts institution is essential.

Skills include exceptional research capabilities, proficiency in Microsoft Office, strong communication skills, and database management experience. A broad knowledge of art history, particularly from the pre-modern to contemporary periods, is preferred.

Reading proficiency in two or more languages is required, along with familiarity with museum processes and a deep commitment to the museum's mission.
