Job Overview

The Chief Legal Officer will manage the daily functions at the office, leading a team of 8, which includes 4 attorneys. This role will also involve providing legal assistance to qualified clients and handling a caseload across two to three legal disciplines, tailored to the individual's expertise and the office's requirements. As part of a comprehensive approach, legal representation may encompass various legal fields as necessary, administrative advocacy, and community outreach in line with program standards, priorities, and ethical guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver exceptional legal representation to clients in accordance with professional conduct standards.
  • Oversee and evaluate the work of support staff assisting the attorney's clients.
  • Maintain organized and accurate client records, following case management policies.
  • Engage in community education initiatives by speaking to local groups and agency personnel, contributing ideas for, and assisting in the creation and updating of educational materials.
  • Supervise all office personnel and volunteers in alignment with organizational policies.
  • Recruit office staff and facilitate the onboarding process in collaboration with the Hiring Manager and Human Resources.
  • Collaborate with private bar members and the Volunteer Lawyer Program to enhance private bar participation.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and regulations by routinely reviewing cases and adhering to organizational procedures.
  • Foster a collegial and effective working environment among staff and within the organization.
  • Participate in internal committees and initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. Address client satisfaction feedback and concerns.
  • Adhere to the Legal Services Corporation's Performance Criteria and the American Bar Association's Standards for Civil Legal Aid.
  • Encourage the professional growth of all office personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) with a minimum of 4 years of legal experience, including prior supervisory roles.
  • Licensed to practice in Tennessee, eligible for admission through reciprocity, or willing to take the next available bar exam.
  • Strong research, writing, and advocacy capabilities, with effective communication skills both orally and in writing. Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in client interactions and crisis situations. High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, plan effectively, solve problems, meet deadlines, and perform well under pressure.
  • Capacity to set and uphold expectations for team members in a dynamic, high-volume setting while maintaining ethical standards.
  • Experience in change management and fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Proficiency in Spanish is an advantage.
