Job Summary

UTMB Health is seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant II to join our team. As a Medical Assistant II, you will provide technical, supportive, age-specific, and developmentally appropriate patient care functions for assigned clinical areas. You will work as a member of a Patient Centered Medical Home clinical team or in a role that includes routine administrative and clinical tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care functions, including vital signs, medication administration, and specimen collection.
  • Assist with patient flow within assigned outpatient clinic setting.
  • Respond to call-lights and provide comfort measures to patients and families.
  • Perform technical and supportive patient care skills, incorporating the patient's plan of care and following approved policy and procedure.
  • Obtain vital signs, accurately document chief complaint and reason for visit, and use aseptic techniques and infection control measures in the performance of duties.
  • Accurately collect excretory specimens, such as urine and feces, and obtain blood samples by venipuncture.
  • Accurately perform tests, such as basic urine chemistry using chemical strips, guaiac, Ph, blood glucose, UPT, and hemocult.
  • Measure and record intake and output as ordered, and prepare and assist patients undergoing treatments, examinations, and procedures.
  • Recognize patient care priorities, treatment plan, objectives, and potential crisis, and under direction of physician, provide other treatments and care to patients appropriate to training, as assigned.
  • Recognize and communicate patient needs and unusual occurrences with patients and families.
  • Refill patient medications as requested, using the guidelines for the prescribing physician/provider in their assigned area and in accordance with the policy C51, Prescription Refill Management for Ambulatory Care Services.
  • Safely and properly administer medications as assigned.
  • Accurately document/communicate interventions and measurements, and communicate relevant information to appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Under supervision, complete accurate, concise, and legible documentation on patient clinic record.
  • Assist with medication reconciliation as required.
  • Assist in the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and the environment, and assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Check equipment/supplies for expiration dates, electrical safety tags, intactness, and usability, and report equipment and supplies needing replaced or repaired.
  • Stock rooms, carts, cabinets, etc. as assigned/requested.
  • Respect and support patient rights, and serve as patient/family advocate.
  • Practice principles of patient and employee confidentiality, and utilize available resources and seek assistance in dealing with ethical dilemmas, as appropriate.
  • Practice positive customer peer relations, and consistently communicate in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Report and seek assistance in dealing with guest complaints/concerns, and establish and maintain a positive rapport with patient/family and co-workers.
  • Consistently respond to customer requests/needs in an appropriate manner.
  • Participate in and support continuous quality improvement activities at the clinic/departmental level, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate acceptable productivity and practices cost containment.
  • Prioritize and complete all work in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and flexibility, and effectively and efficiently use time, equipment, and supplies.
  • Function as an interdependent and supportive team member, and provide support and assistance, as appropriate.
  • With direction, remain calm and purposeful and respond in an appropriate, professional manner in emergent or chaotic situations.
  • Participate in clinic meetings/activities and support the clinical, departmental, and organizational philosophy and goals.
  • Accept responsibility for own growth/development, and participate in in-services and ongoing education programs.
  • Remain current on all in-service/education/credentials/certification requirements for position, as appropriate.
  • Exchange constructive feedback with peers and others, and conduct self-evaluation and participate in developmental goal setting.
