Qualifications
Applicants must be citizens of the United States or possess eligibility to work within the United States. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in areas such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, business, or public administration is required. Candidates should demonstrate unquestionable integrity and outstanding character, along with sound health. Applicants must be under 37 years of age at the time of appointment unless they have prior federal law enforcement experience under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). A valid driver's license is also necessary.
The above qualifications are strictly enforced.
Experience and Preferred Skills:
Applicants who can enhance their degree qualifications with relevant post-academic, progressively responsible experience may be considered for higher salary brackets. Experience in fields such as probation, pretrial services, parole, corrections, criminal investigations, or substance/addiction treatment may be advantageous. Experience as a police officer, custodial, or security officer will not be considered.
- Comprehensive understanding of federal law and the criminal justice system, particularly in relation to the responsibilities of probation/pretrial services officers.
- Proficient in supervising defendants, with skills in managing challenging individuals and employing negotiation and motivational techniques.
- Ability to exercise discretion, showcasing legal reasoning and critical thinking capabilities.
- Familiarity with automated and internet resources for conducting background checks, criminal histories, and investigative databases (e.g., National Crime Information Center).
- Exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities, with a knack for compiling and summarizing information within set deadlines.
- Knowledge of legal terminology.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including criminal defendants, law enforcement, judicial personnel, and attorneys.
- Adherence to safety protocols in both office and community settings.
- A master's degree is preferred.
Classification Level Requirements
- CL 25 - Requires one year of specialized experience and completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Potential for promotion to CL 27 without further competition.
- CL 27 - Requires two years of specialized experience or completion of a master's degree from an accredited institution. Potential for promotion to CL 28 without further competition.
- CL 28 - Requires more than two years of specialized experience and completion of a master's degree from an accredited institution.

Miscellaneous
Starting Salary: The current starting salary range is CL 25/1 to CL 28/25, with compensation between $49,965 and $86,962, depending on education and experience (possible CL 28/26 - CL 28/61 for transfers only).
Earning Potential: Officers are eligible for semiannual or annual increases based on satisfactory performance. Promotional opportunities to specialist and supervisory roles are available within the office for qualified employees on a competitive basis.
Additional Information: Mandatory participation in the federal retirement system and social security program. This position is covered under federal hazardous duty retirement provisions, with mandatory retirement at age 57. When calculating leave accrual and retirement benefits, prior service with other federal agencies and military service will be considered. The U.S. Probation Office is headquartered in Nashville with branch offices in other locations. While the agency aims to accommodate individual duty station preferences, all employees may be required to transfer to any office within the judicial district as necessary. The U.S. Probation Office does not reimburse candidates for interview or relocation expenses. The office reserves the right to amend or withdraw any announcement without prior notice to applicants.
