Communication Specialist in Speech Therapy

Position Overview:

The Speech and Language Pathologist is responsible for delivering comprehensive prevention, evaluation, and intervention services for students facing challenges in communication, specifically those who qualify under the TDOE criteria for language and speech impairments. The primary goal is to support students in achieving their educational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment: Evaluate students' communication abilities, including articulation, fluency, voice, and both expressive and receptive language skills, to identify communication disorders and determine eligibility for programs.
  2. Collaboration: Work closely with various stakeholders, including parents, educators, medical professionals, and administrative staff, to share information, address concerns, and ensure compliance with established protocols.
  3. Coordination: Organize meetings and processes for eligible students, such as testing, IEPs, and parent conferences, to present evaluation findings and develop tailored treatment plans.
  4. Plan Development: Create intervention strategies and educational resources aimed at reducing the negative effects of communication disorders while adhering to regulatory standards.
  5. Instruction: Guide support staff on communicative disorders, assistive technology usage, and feeding techniques, as well as implement prescribed treatment strategies.
  6. Technology Integration: Teach eligible students how to effectively use communication technologies, including hearing aids and augmentative devices, to enhance their educational experience.
  7. Medical Interpretation: Analyze medical documentation relevant to speech and language pathology to ensure the appropriateness of treatment plans.
  8. Record Maintenance: Keep accurate files and documentation, including progress reports and treatment plans, to ensure compliance and accessibility of information.
  9. Professional Development: Engage in meetings, workshops, and training sessions to exchange information and enhance professional knowledge.
  10. Additional Duties: Perform other related responsibilities as necessary to support the effective operation of the department.
  11. Therapeutic Services: Provide direct speech and language therapy to students to mitigate the impact of communication disorders on their academic success.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Communicative Disorders, Speech and Hearing Language Impairment, Speech Pathology, or a related field is required. A Master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred. Candidates must possess a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech and Hearing Association.

Additional Information:

Applicants must hold TNDOE speech certification.
