Job Summary
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive suite of services for patients treated by the University of California, as well as its healthcare providers and insurers. These services encompass, but are not limited to, medication procurement, storage, and security; precise and timely preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of medication use policies within the institution; drug information services for healthcare professionals and patients; and involvement in technology evaluation and quality assurance initiatives. The Department collaborates with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic unit within the School of Pharmacy, responsible for teaching professional courses in the PharmD curriculum, conducting research, and engaging in public service. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services share a commitment to pharmaceutical care. Under Pharmaceutical Services, the Inpatient Pharmacy, located at various sites, provides pharmaceutical care to patients admitted to hospitals and specialized services to researchers on campus.
All Pharmacy Technicians report to the supervising or operating pharmacist who holds legal responsibility by virtue of state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by Pharmaceutical Services. The Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for all tasks related to traditional pharmacy prescription dispensing and medication distribution. They may also assist in the electronic entries of medications and prescriptions, including entries of specialized medications in the patient profile as directed by a pharmacist.

Note: The compensation ranges for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement can vary significantly; however, job offers typically fall within a range of 80% - 120% of the established midpoint. Offers will consider the experience of the final candidate and the current salary levels of individuals in similar roles.
For positions covered by a bargaining unit agreement, specific guidelines will dictate where a new hire would be placed within the range.
Department Overview
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at the University of California has a long-standing reputation as a pioneer in clinical pharmacy services, established in 1965. Required Qualifications
- Experience and skills in a Hospital (Medical Center) Pharmacy and/or in a retail/community pharmacy, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Active Licensed Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
- Completion of a recognized/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (including hands-on training during externship), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to compound pharmaceutical preparations and prepare commercially unavailable oral formulations, requiring mathematical calculations and pharmaceutical compounding techniques.
- Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment and work under constant pressure.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in responding to or referring inquiries from nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Proficiency in performing basic computer entries.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
- Preference for candidates with experience in a hospital-setting Inpatient Pharmacy/I.V. Additives.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are preferred.
License/Certification
- Active Licensed Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
