About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled International Tax Director to join our team at Alvarez & Marsal. As a key member of our International Tax practice, you will be responsible for leading the US-outbound tax planning support for international operations of US-headquartered companies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Tax Planning: Develop and implement tax planning strategies for international operations, including repatriation strategies, foreign tax credit optimization, and local country tax planning opportunities.
  • Prepare Tax Accruals: Lead the preparation of quarterly and annual international ASC 740 (FAS 109/FIN 48) tax accruals, global effective tax rate calculations, and footnote disclosure.
  • Manage Tax Compliance: Oversee the preparation of forms 5471 for controlled foreign corporations, forms 8858 and 8865 for flow-through foreign entities, forms 1120, 1065, 1120-S for U.S. companies with foreign operations, and forms 1120-F for foreign corporations with U.S. trades or business/permanent establishments.
  • Ensure Process Compliance: Ensure that processes are followed to provide supporting documentation of earnings and profits pool, PTEP, and U.S. tax basis for foreign subsidiaries and/or branches of U.S. multinationals.
  • Review Taxable Distributions: Review taxable distributions calculations, §987 gains/losses, Subpart F income, ECI, Global Intangible Low-Taxed Income, CFC attribution, Section 245A Deduction, hybrid transactions, 163(j), FDII, etc.
  • Oversee Foreign Tax Credits: Oversee the preparation of Forms 1118 and 1116 for foreign tax credits and supporting documentation.
  • Manage Client Relationships: Lead client calls to understand critical areas of importance and apply tax technical knowledge to specific client situations.
  • Manage Risk and Resources: Manage risk, resources, staffing, and financial performance for multiple engagements at once, including billing, collections, and project budgets.
  • Develop and Mentor Team Members: Supervise, develop, mentor, and motivate our Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers by actively participating in their advancement through on-the-job training, providing performance feedback, counseling, and fostering our team-based atmosphere.
  • Manage Workloads and Deadlines: Manage workloads and deadlines for Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers with a focus on quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of the project teams.
  • Demonstrate Commitment and Desired Behaviors: Demonstrate commitment and desired behaviors while working with others that have diverse experiences, skills, and perspectives.
  • Conduct Day-to-Day Management: Conduct day-to-day management of accounts to ensure delivery of timely and accurate work product.
  • Support Business Development: Regularly support business development efforts, seeing opportunities for add-on work, thought leadership, new client pitches, and optimizing the compliance process.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Law (J.D./L.L.M.).
  • License: Licensed CPA or Licensed Attorney.
  • Experience: 5+ years' experience providing International Tax planning experience required, preferably in professional services (Big 4 experience or other consulting experience).
  • Leadership Experience: Prior proven experience leading others while managing multiple work streams.
  • Success as a Trusted Advisor: Demonstrated success as a trusted tax and business advisor, building relationships, identifying and addressing client needs, and delivering high-quality deliverables.
  • Passion for Training and Mentoring: Passion for training and mentoring staff.
  • Excellent Communication and Analytical Skills: Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to establish credibility and influence clients, and excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced user of all Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Power BI).
  • Ability to Work on Multiple Projects: Ability to simultaneously work on several projects and effectively manage deadlines.
  • High Motivation to Learn and Grow: High motivation to learn and grow and actively identifies trends and new ideas for enhancing solutions and approaches.
  • Detail-Oriented and Organized: Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Written Documentation: Demonstrated proficiency in written documentation of tax issues and analysis (e.g., drafting of technical memoranda, step-plans, tax opinion letters, etc.).
