The Canine Behavior Specialist plays a crucial role within PetSuites, reporting directly to the General Manager. This position requires not only strong customer service skills but also a genuine passion for assisting pet owners. Most importantly, candidates should possess experience with dogs, an understanding of canine behavior, and knowledge of reward-based training techniques.

A Day In The Life:

In this engaging role, you will have the opportunity to train dogs of various ages, from puppies to those needing additional guidance. You will engage with pet owners to understand their training goals and concerns. As you observe the behaviors of each dog, you will work to uncover the best training methods tailored to their needs. Your responsibilities will also include educating pet owners on effective training practices. Expect to document your observations and provide valuable insights to pet parents. Additionally, be prepared for the hands-on aspects of the job, which may include cleaning up after the dogs and enjoying their affectionate greetings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct daily training sessions with assigned dogs.
  • Develop training plans to assist clients in modifying their pets' behaviors.
  • Meet with clients upon their arrival and departure to discuss training expectations and progress.
  • Provide enrichment activities for training dogs.
  • Document and communicate the dog's behavior and training status during each session through various formats.
  • Adhere to LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) training standards in all interactions.
  • Implement established class curricula or create new ones as needed.
  • Maintain high educational standards in dog training.
  • Facilitate group classes and private lessons.
  • Assist with additional training sessions, including virtual options when required.
  • Collaborate with other departments as necessary.
  • Contribute to business growth by making recommendations to current pet owners.
  • Create engaging content for social media, including photos and videos.
Team Qualities:
  • A deep passion for animal care, particularly for dogs and cats, with a commitment to learning about animal behavior for their safety.
  • A focus on safe and gentle handling; aggressive or aversive techniques are not tolerated.
  • Customer service-oriented, capable of addressing customer needs while adhering to company policies.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to build lasting relationships with clients.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 60 lbs.
  • Conflict resolution skills to handle challenging situations with tact.
  • Team-oriented with a willingness to assist other departments.
  • A cheerful and positive attitude.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially in documentation, and proficiency in computer systems.
  • Reliable and punctual, with a flexible schedule, including availability on weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work independently while following directions.
  • Comfortable working in various environmental conditions, including outdoor settings.
  • Willingness to manage the physical demands of the job, including close contact with animals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of operant and classical conditioning as it relates to dog training is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in animal training or equivalent education is preferred.
  • Understanding of canine behavior and breed characteristics.
  • CCPDT Certification or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
