Job Summary

The U.S. Courts is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Probation Officer to join our team in the Supervision Division. As a Probation Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring public safety and providing support to individuals under supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular field activities, including home and community visits, to monitor individuals under supervision.
  • Investigate employment, sources of income, lifestyle, and associates to assess risk and compliance.
  • Address substance abuse, mental health, domestic violence, and similar problems through assessment, monitoring, and counseling.
  • Communicate with other organizations and persons concerning individuals under supervision's behavior and the conditions of supervision.
  • Identify and investigate violations and implement appropriate alternatives and sanctions.

Requirements

  • Must possess a four-year degree from an accredited college or university in a field of academic study such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, business or public administration.
  • Must have two years of specialized experience or the completion of a master's degree in a field of study closely related to the position or a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience as a probation officer on a federal, state or county level is desirable.
  • Knowledge of federal law and the criminal justice system and how it relates to the roles and functions of a United States Probation Officer.

Working Conditions

The duties of probation officers require the investigation and management of persons under supervision who present physical danger to officers and to the public. On a daily basis, officers face unusual mental and physical stress because they are subject to danger and possible harm during frequent, direct contact with individuals who are charged with criminal offenses or convicted of committing federal offenses.

Medical and Background Requirements

The selectee considered for this position will undergo a medical examination, complete a ten-year background investigation and a drug screening. Upon successful completion of all components, the selectee will be appointed provisionally, pending a favorable suitability determination by the court.
