Key Responsibilities


The Financial Counselor plays a crucial role in assisting patients with their financial arrangements before, during, or after their treatment.

This position involves collecting and updating insurance, financial, and demographic data within the Epic system.

Professionally and courteously assists patients and their families in understanding and managing their financial responsibilities, including co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance. Additionally, counselors may aid patients with Medicaid, Third Party eligibility, and Charity Care applications and processing. This role includes establishing payment plans and collecting self-pay balances as needed.

Furthermore, the counselor will address any ad-hoc financial concerns that arise before, during, and after treatment.

Adherence to quality assurance protocols and established productivity standards is essential to meet the performance expectations of the work unit.

Qualifications

A High School Diploma or GED with 2+ years of relevant experience is required
OR
A Bachelor's degree is required.
Strong reading and communication skills are essential, along with basic computer and keyboarding abilities, and intermediate mathematical skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, as well as knowledge of proper phone etiquette.

Experience in a healthcare environment with a focus on customer service is crucial for gaining insight into patient financial counseling and insurance verification processes.

Familiarity with self-pay collections, medical terminology, ICD10 knowledge, and a basic understanding of insurance is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to navigate a complex environment with diverse perspectives. Comfort with ambiguity, sound decision-making, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills are vital.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, organized, and capable of fostering a collaborative workplace while representing Mayo Clinic professionally.

The ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously is necessary for this role. A strong belief in the mission and ethical conduct is paramount.

Exceptional interpersonal skills are required, along with the ability to engage professionally with individuals from various backgrounds.

Experience with an Epic RC/EMR system is preferred.
