Position Overview:
Meta is on the lookout for a skilled Thermal Engineer to enhance our Hardware Design Team. Our infrastructure, including systems and data centers, serves as the backbone for our rapidly expanding services. This team is tasked with the thermal hardware design across various domains such as AI, networking, computing, and storage. We focus on evaluating and advancing both current and emerging thermal technologies, including liquid cooling and thermal packaging, to optimize our hardware for efficient and high-performance data center operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Hardware Design team to ensure optimal component design and coordinate with the Data Center Operations team for seamless product deployment.
  • Develop and implement testing protocols to assess the thermal performance and efficiency of hardware and thermal technologies, including quantitative simulations and analyses of cooling strategies.
  • Innovate and investigate advanced thermal cooling solutions for packaging and hardware systems suitable for large-scale deployment.
  • Create analytical and numerical models utilizing various Computational Fluid Dynamics tools or relevant simulation software to represent system thermodynamics and heat transfer.
  • Engage with external vendors, including ODMs and component suppliers, on design, testing, and production processes.
  • Produce and disseminate case studies and technical papers detailing thermal analyses of cooling systems and technologies.
  • Establish parameters for thermal design and testing, ensuring correlation between design and test results to validate predictive models.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in thermal design for servers or advanced packaging.
  • Proficiency in computational thermal simulation software, such as Flotherm, Future Facilities, or Icepak, for optimizing hardware cooling designs.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment, including data acquisition systems, airflow chambers, and environmental chambers for thermal validation and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and optimizing thermal cooling solutions, including custom heat sink designs and fan speed control algorithms.
  • Ability to create mechanical system schematics using 3D CAD tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant thermal discipline.
  • Over 2 years of experience in thermal design focused on advanced cooling solutions.
  • Familiarity with custom thermal solutions, including heat sinks, cold plates, and thermal interface materials for hardware systems.
  • Knowledge of design and optimization of control systems for components such as fans or pumps.
  • Understanding of data center cooling system designs.
  • Experience in Unix/Linux environments and familiarity with scripting and coding in Python.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Experience in creating mathematical, computational, and numerical models of industrial cooling systems using MATLAB or similar tools.
