Mission of the Department:
To enhance the mental well-being of individuals through education, clinical services, research, and community outreach. To oversee the educational initiatives of the Psychiatry residency program.

Primary Objective of this Role:

The Department of Psychiatry at the Virginia Commonwealth University is in search of a distinguished academic leader to take on the role of Residency Program Director.

In this capacity, the Director will be responsible for advancing and refining the department's ACGME accredited residency program.

Key Responsibilities:

The Residency Program Director will primarily focus on the administration, management, and enhancement of the Psychiatry residency program.

The Director will hold the responsibility, authority, and accountability for:

overseeing residency program operations; engaging in teaching and scholarly activities; managing resident recruitment and selection, evaluation, promotion, and disciplinary actions; supervising residents; facilitating resident education within the context of patient care; and ensuring adherence to all ACGME program requirements.



Additional Expectations for the Role:

  • Deliver clinical services to patients, ensure timely documentation in electronic patient records, and manage clinical billing processes
  • Instruct and mentor residents, medical students, and other trainees
  • Comply with all relevant institutional policies and procedures, and engage in research as applicable
Essential Qualifications:

  • Completion of clinical training in Psychiatry and certification as MD/DO through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
  • Eligibility for Virginia state medical licensure
  • Proven academic and clinical leadership experience within a psychiatry residency program at a prominent academic healthcare institution, including program oversight, development, staffing management, and a strong background in educational initiatives, quality assurance, and resident engagement
  • Academic qualifications and experience suitable for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the VCU School of Medicine
  • Candidates should exhibit a strategic, dynamic, and visionary approach to promote innovation, growth, and the development of new educational programs within VCU's behavioral health initiatives, along with experience in leading medical education efforts that nurture and guide the next generation of clinical and scientific leaders
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse environment for faculty, staff, and students, and a dedication to uphold this commitment as a faculty member at VCU
