Occupational Summary

Engage in specialized and intricate technical tasks associated with the examination and assessment of cytologic specimens, including gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration (FNA) samples, for the identification of cancer and other pathological conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate gynecologic and non-gynecologic slides to determine the presence or absence of disease.
  • Provide differential diagnoses and discuss cytological criteria.
  • Accurately document diagnoses in the electronic system.
  • Submit relevant slides for pathologist review.
  • Review patient histories pertinent to diagnoses.
  • Ensure specimen requisitions and slides are complete and accurately labeled.
  • Conduct semi-annual reviews of individual monthly statistics with management.
  • Participate in CLIA diagnostic reviews with management and medical directors.
  • Identify and address cytologic issues with appropriate staff members.
  • Assist in the cytology preparation area as needed.
  • Engage in continuing education activities and share educational resources with the Teaching Coordinator.
  • Mentor cytotechnology students with over two years of screening experience.
  • Conduct quality control and retrospective screenings as required.
  • Provide FNA coverage, including clinical history reviews and adequacy assessments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to screen a minimum of 50 slides per day, possess effective communication skills, and exhibit strong organizational and computer skills. A high level of understanding of cytology theory and practice is essential, supported by evidence of ongoing education.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in cytology or a related field, or a Bachelor of Arts degree with at least 24 semester hours of required science coursework. Successful completion of a CAHEA accredited cytology program is required, with a Master's degree preferred.

Experience: No prior experience is required.

Licenses and Certifications: BS/BA CT(ASCP) certification or eligibility is required, with successful completion of the board certification examination necessary for continued employment.
