Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Chief Counsel within the Office of the Director Legal Unit, the Attorney IV (Senior Counsel) plays a crucial role in representing the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations and its various divisions. This position demands a high level of expertise and experience in handling complex legal matters that fall under the Department's jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities

The Attorney IV will be responsible for a wide range of legal activities, including but not limited to:

  • Representing the Department and its Director in civil litigation and cases involving constitutional matters.
  • Handling internal personnel legal issues and workers' compensation cases related to special funds.
  • Analyzing requests for public works coverage and drafting decisions for review.
  • Serving as a hearing officer for appeals regarding prevailing wage violations.
  • Providing legal counsel on apprenticeship issues and retaliation complaint investigations.
  • Offering legal analysis and advice on Public Records Act requests and proposed legislation.
  • Drafting regulations and providing legal services on various operational matters.

Working Environment

This position is a full-time role situated in an office environment. Employees will engage in extensive computer work for drafting legal documents, conducting research, and communication. In-state travel may be required for assignments, with potential overnight trips.

Qualifications

Candidates must be a member of the California Bar and have a minimum of six years of legal practice experience. A legal writing sample is required as part of the application process.
