Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Hospital Operations Administrator to join our team at The University of Chicago Medicine. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our hospital departments during evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the final clinical authority in processing patient concerns and issues during off-shifts, guiding staff on report completion, and distributing reports to clinical leadership as needed.
  • Have final management authority over hospital departments during off-shifts, working closely with administrative and management staff, physicians, nurses, patients, and their families to ensure efficient operations.
  • Work closely with emergency departments, patient logistics transfer, bed access, admitting, staffing resource office, individual nursing units, operating rooms, and outpatient clinics to assign beds and transfer patients appropriately, expediting the throughput process.
  • Act as a liaison with senior management and other levels of management across departments to ensure smooth and efficient hospital operations, providing feedback and guidance on staff performance, fitness for duty, and other matters.
  • Attend emergency situations, providing administrative assistance and support, and critiquing the effectiveness of emergency responses.
  • Direct bed management meetings during assigned hours, following up to facilitate timely throughput.
  • Provide problem-solving support to hospital support areas and serve as on-site administration during off-shifts, alerting senior leadership, public affairs, and media relations personnel regarding hospital news events.
  • Round to units when assistance is required, making regular rounds with UCM to accomplish purposeful rounding, and having a strong working knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, and union contracts.
  • Locate and procure materials and human resources necessary to ensure continuous operations, relocating staff via floating and implementing census management as needed to balance workload and patient care needs.
  • Have final authority for staffing decisions during assigned hours and direct disaster response in accordance with hospital policies, acting as HICS Commander until designated personnel arrive.
  • Ensure basic hospital functions continue in times of crisis, consulting with clinical staff and advising them in complex patient care situations.
  • Anticipate potential risk situations and communicate them promptly to directors, managers, and the medical/legal department.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Current RN Illinois license
  • BLS Certification
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in progressive hospital/nursing management positions, preferably with broad hospital/patient care management responsibilities
  • A working knowledge of the overall operation of the hospitals and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work with diverse staff and management groups in a complex organization
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and as a self-motivator
  • Working knowledge of word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree

Position Details:

  • Job Type/FTE: Registry (0.10 FTE)
  • Shift: Rotating, 7am-7pm; 7pm-7am (2-4 shifts per six-week schedule)
