Supervision:
* Oversees the workflow of phlebotomists within the Specimen Processing department.
Distribution and Transportation:
* Ensures the precise and efficient movement of laboratory supplies, equipment, and specimens.
* Adheres to all applicable laws and regulations concerning the processing and transportation of laboratory specimens.
Specimen Handling & Processing:
* Complies with regulatory standards in the handling and processing of laboratory specimens.
* Implements proper protocols for accurate patient identification and labeling of all specimens.
Communication:
* Engages effectively with all NMHS staff, patients, their families, and customers.
Customer Service:
* Applies AIDET principles as appropriate.
* Participates in CARES training.
* When necessary, ensures proper service recovery for patients and/or caregivers.
* Answers phone calls in a courteous and efficient manner.
Employee Relations:
* Collaborates as part of a team with all Pathology and NMHS personnel.
Reporting/Recordkeeping:
* Guarantees that department testing relevant to their area is reported accurately and promptly.
* Aids in achieving departmental Performance Improvement goals.
* Ensures proper documentation of all required instrument monthly maintenance and quality control.
Education:
* Assists in the training of students and new staff members.
* Engages in continuing education programs to maintain and enhance skills.
* Remains informed about regulatory changes.
Regulation:
* Complies with NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines.
* Adheres to relevant Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guidelines/regulations/laws/statutes.
* Follows College of American Pathologist (CAP) & Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards.
Job Knowledge:
* Associate of Arts degree as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist from a CAHEA/NAACLS accredited program is required.
* ASCP Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist is preferred within 12 months after graduation from an accredited program. Consideration will be given to 10 years of experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory in lieu of certification. Note: If ASCP certification has recently lapsed, the employee will have 90 days to fulfill continuing education and recertification requirements. If the credential has lapsed for over 10 years, the employee must retake the certification exam. MLTs credentialed prior to 2006 are exempt from the continuing education requirement.
* Valid Mississippi Driver's License and acceptable driving record/history is preferred.
* Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal) are required.
* Knowledge of and appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens is required.
