Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Chemist to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for supervising and directing chemical laboratory operations, conducting chemistry-related research projects, and participating in complex and difficult tests and analyses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review the work of subordinate personnel, including assigning tasks, providing guidance, and evaluating performance.
  • Participate in chemical and bacteriological work related to sewage treatment processes, including research on sewage and sewage treatment, industrial wastes, groundwater quality, stream pollution, sludge use and disposal.
  • Develop and implement laboratory quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures, and participate in the development of appropriate QA/QC procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair analytical and monitoring equipment, and evaluate and verify data generated by various analytical sections.
  • Prepare required reports and participate in training of subordinate personnel.
  • Assume duties of section head in their absence, and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, and four years of full-time professional work in chemistry, including at least two years of chemical analyses of water, sewage, and industrial wastes, and at least one year of supervision of chemists.
  • Graduate study in chemistry or chemical engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of three years.
  • Civil service status as an Environmental Chemist.
Working Conditions

This position may involve exposure to a variety of chemical and biological materials, some of which may be hazardous or toxic. May involve exposure to fumes and noxious odors.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of wastewater and sludge treatment processes.
  • Considerable knowledge of environmental chemistry, quality assurance, laboratory policies and procedures, and chemistry-related research methodology.
  • Considerable knowledge of statistical methods used in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Considerable knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Knowledge of analytical instruments and instrumentation systems.
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently, compile, analyze and interpret a variety of data, and plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
