Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Chemist to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for conducting complex and difficult tests and analyses, supervising subordinate personnel, and participating in chemistry-related research projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and review the work of subordinate personnel, including assigning tasks, providing guidance, and evaluating performance.
  • Participate in chemical and bacteriological work related to sewage treatment processes, including research on sewage and sewage treatment, industrial wastes, groundwater quality, and stream pollution.
  • Develop and implement laboratory quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures, including evaluating and verifying data generated by various analytical sections.
  • Troubleshoot and repair analytical and monitoring equipment, and participate in the training of subordinate personnel.
  • Assume duties of section head in their absence, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in chemistry or chemical engineering.
  • Four years of full-time professional work in chemistry, including at least two years of chemical analyses of water, sewage, and industrial wastes, and at least one year of supervision of chemists.
  • Graduate study in chemistry or chemical engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of three years.
  • Civil service status as an Environmental Chemist, and one year of service with the District as an Environmental Chemist.

Working Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of chemical and biological materials, some of which may be hazardous or toxic. May involve exposure to fumes and noxious odors.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of wastewater and sludge treatment processes.
  • Considerable knowledge of environmental chemistry, quality assurance, laboratory policies and procedures, and chemistry-related research methodology.
  • Considerable knowledge of statistical methods used in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Considerable knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently, compile, analyze and interpret a variety of data, and plan and supervise the work of others.
