Job Summary

We're seeking a highly skilled Language Assessment Scientist to join our growing research team. As a key member of our team, you'll contribute to the development of ground-breaking assessment instruments and collaborate on studies related to the validity and efficacy of our Duolingo English Test.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with dedicated assessment scientists, engineers, and designers to bring innovative assessment instruments to life.
  • Collaborate on studies related to the validity and efficacy of the Duolingo English Test.
  • Help develop responsible AI standards and practices.
  • Disseminate research findings through technical reports, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements
  • PhD in language testing, applied linguistics, educational measurement, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of work experience in an education-related field (academia or industry).
  • Proficiency in R or Python for data analysis.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience developing and/or conducting research on high-stakes language assessments.
  • Research expertise and publication/presentation record in the field of language assessment.
  • Experience with large language models for content generation and a general knowledge of machine learning, natural language processing, and other technologies in language testing.
  • Familiarity with standard language proficiency frameworks (CEFR preferred).
  • A desire to make the world a better place through technology.
  • Ability to relocate to NYC or Pittsburgh, PA.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of post-PhD experience working in an education-related field.
  • Outstanding skills in R and Python for data analysis.
  • Relevant quantitative coursework and experience.
  • Experience with the design and development of computer-adaptive tests.
  • Proficiency in other programming languages.
