This position involves general law enforcement and firefighting work dedicated to the protection of life and/or property. The role requires working under general supervision following a period of field training and may involve assignments in the Patrol Division, Fire Division, special assignments, or as an investigator or Crime Prevention Officer in the Criminal Investigations Division.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Working knowledge of the principles, procedures, and equipment used in law enforcement and firefighting.
- Ability to develop and exhibit knowledge of modern principles, practices, and procedures of police and fire suppression work.
- Knowledge of Patrol areas of the city to preserve law and order, prevent and discover the commission of crime, and enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations.
- Answers calls and complaints received by radio, telephone, or in person involving emergency, disorder, crime, and fire.
- May be assigned to the D.A.R.E. or School Resource Programs, which entails developing and presenting educational programs to students in the school system.
- Conducts police-related community awareness and public relations work.
- Interviews persons with complaints or inquiries, takes statements, and tends to the proper disposition of the information or directs them to proper authorities.
- Conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, and locates witnesses.
- Makes arrests and/or takes prisoners to jail.
- Visits crime scenes, searches for and preserves evidence, investigates clues, and searches for and apprehends violators.
- Ensures that prisoners are charged, processed, and confined.
- Composes written reports.
- Appears in court to present evidence and/or testify as required.
- Conducts specialized investigations and raids.
- May administer basic first aid.
- Attends in-service training and practices the use of firearms.
- Working knowledge of the principles, procedures, and equipment used in law enforcement and firefighting.
- Ability to develop and exhibit knowledge of modern principles, practices, and procedures of police and fire suppression work.
- Knowledge of pertinent Federal and State laws and City ordinances.
- Must exhibit the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Must have the ability to develop and exhibit considerable knowledge of the geography of the City.
- Ability to develop a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the City and the Public Safety Department.
- Must be able to attain and maintain CPOST certification.
- Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
- Maintain and exhibit knowledge of basic emergency medical principles.
- Must have the ability to clearly communicate and report on law enforcement activities.
- Must demonstrate the ability to use mature judgment and make correct decisions.
- Must demonstrate the ability to analyze complex problems and issues.
- Must possess the ability to accurately and effectively discharge a rifle, shotgun, and handgun with left and right hands.
- Ability to subdue a violent and/or uncooperative person by methods requiring physical force.
- Ability to drag or carry an average adult person, about 160 pounds, a distance of fifteen to twenty feet, away from danger.
- Ability to repeatedly or continuously climb, work from, and descend ladders while carrying victims or equipment and using safety equipment and procedures.
- Ability to operate hose lines with stream or fog nozzles over a long period of time without becoming fatigued.
- Ability to operate a fire hydrant quickly, using a hydrant wrench.
- Ability to remove energized electrical wire from contact with a victim using hot line cutters or a pike pole.
- Ability to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Ability to don protective clothing and equipment quickly and effectively.
- Ability to wear a facemask while working, in such a fashion that the seal is secure and air leakage will not occur.
- Ability to coil rope and tie knots.
- Ability to drive apparatus according to state and local regulations governing operation of emergency vehicles.
- Ability to discriminate and distinguish colors accurately.
- Ability to hear and understand conversation in a noisy environment.
- Ability to discern where sounds are coming from.
