Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Patient Care Technician to join our team at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. As a Patient Care Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting the nursing staff in our Cardiology Stepdown Unit 11G.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct Patient Care Activities
    • Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
    • Take and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, and blood pressure.
    • Measure and record intake and output, including output from drains.
    • Apply cardiac monitors and oximetry.
    • Obtain EKGs and perform normal newborn hearing screenings.
    • Collect specimens, including urine, stool, blood, and sputum.
    • Provide morning care, bed baths, and evening care according to established nursing care procedures.
    • Assist with pre-and post-operative care, positioning patients as ordered, and applying special equipment for safety.
    • Respond to emergency situations, secure assistance, and initiate basic life support.
  • Indirect Patient Care
    • Maintain a safe and clean environment, including temperature logs, defrosting, and cleaning refrigerators.
    • Perform duties delegated by the RN to facilitate patient care and the efficient operation of the assigned patient care unit.
    • Collect and inventory patient belongings on admission, transfer, and discharge.
    • Complete charges using appropriate documentation.
    • Order supplies online or requisition and stock in the appropriate location.
    • Obtain necessary equipment and supplies to facilitate patient care.
    • Assure room readiness for incoming patients.
    • Check designated equipment for proper functioning.
  • Additional Functions
    • Participate in staff meetings and quality improvement activities.
    • Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly quality control activities.
    • Participate in the orientation of new staff.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.
    Requirements
    • CNA certification or currently enrolled in a nursing program with successful completion of basic clinical rotations.
    • CPR recognition by the American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers).
    • Minimum of 90% correct on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes.
    • Unit-based recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring.
    • High school diploma required; one year of college or nursing education or equivalent experience preferred.
    • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred, with a demonstrated ability to relate to patients, family, nursing, and medical staff.
