Purpose and Scope

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) plays a critical role in providing clinical leadership and expertise to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care to critically ill children. The CNS is responsible for integrating evidence-based practices, advancing clinical practice, and achieving optimal nurse-sensitive patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and expertise to the interprofessional team in the evaluation and implementation of evidence-based therapies and research.
  • Collaborate with other work area leaders in the supervision of unit staff and implementation of projects to achieve the goals and objectives of the work area.
  • Function independently as needed in all aspects of work area clinical operations on a 24-hour basis.
  • Develop and implement education programs to support the development of clinical skills and knowledge among staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and safety.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of recent PICU experience required.
  • Previous supervisory and CNS experience preferred.
  • CA RN license and CNS certification required.
