Position Overview

Our work is pivotal in aiding the DOE Environmental Management Directorate and the National Nuclear Security Administration, contributing to significant projects aimed at addressing environmental challenges linked to the historical nuclear weapons production complex and ensuring the integrity of our nation's nuclear deterrent.

As a Senior Nuclear Engineer, you will leverage your academic expertise to design processes for both new and existing systems. Your role will involve thorough evaluations and assessments of energy and industrial facilities, culminating in detailed reports and calculations that inform system design proposals, upgrades, and equipment replacements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to:
  • Assess and critique the design of energy and industrial process projects.
  • Develop preliminary engineering studies for modifications and retrofitting of existing facilities.
  • Analyze technical challenges, prepare system specifications, and present findings to clients and colleagues.
  • Contribute to Sargent & Lundy's commitment to national security initiatives.
  • Manage daily work priorities across multiple projects, responding to project manager requests.
  • Generate engineering calculations, design drawings, and comprehensive reports.
  • Conduct calculations using chemical inventories of waste tanks, integrating sample data and process knowledge.
  • Gain expertise in radiation shielding to support nuclear facility clients, including performing analyses using MicroShield and MCNP software.
  • Develop proficiency in system reliability analysis through fault trees and event trees.
  • Pursue a professional engineering license.
  • Adhere to NQA-1 quality assurance protocols.
  • Conduct hazard and safety analyses to ensure the secure operation of nuclear facilities.
  • Perform risk assessments and devise strategies to mitigate hazards in nuclear operations.
  • Stay informed on industry standards, process system design, and emerging technologies.
  • Engage in industry committees and conferences.
  • Assist in developing nuclear and radiological readiness exercise programs for various partners.
  • Provide technical support in nuclear operations and nonproliferation efforts.
  • Offer program management and planning support related to nuclear security and vulnerability assessments.
  • Foster your career through peer learning and participation in S&L's Systems of Processes.

Qualifications

U.S. Citizenship is required; dual citizenship with another country is not eligible.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from an accredited program.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in a nuclear-related field.
  • Practical understanding of nuclear engineering applications and technologies.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify and prioritize issues effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Experience with nuclear materials and waste processes.
  • Familiarity with 10 CFR Part 830 - Nuclear Safety Management and DOE Standards.

Valued Skills and Experience:

  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Engineer-in-Training designation.
  • Relevant prior experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of MicroShield and MCNP software.
  • Understanding of federal regulatory programs like the Clean Air Act and RCRA.
  • Current Security Clearance is a plus.
