Position Title: Equipment Operator I

Job Overview:
This position is classified as safety sensitive and is non-exempt (hourly). The primary responsibility is to operate a commercial rear-loading refuse truck on designated routes for the collection of waste and recyclables.

Department: Sanitation Department
Reports To: Sanitation Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:
1. Conducts pre-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure it is clean, serviced, and fueled before departure.
2. Operates the refuse truck along assigned routes to collect waste materials and transport them to designated disposal sites.
3. Empties waste containers into the truck as part of the collection process.
4. Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on the vehicle as needed.
5. Maintains cleanliness of the truck, both inside and out.
6. Engages in basic customer service interactions with residents and city personnel during the execution of duties.
7. Operates a pickup truck and trailer for the collection of recyclables along residential routes.
8. Participates in safety training and additional training sessions as required.
9. May supervise sanitation staff assigned to the same route.
10. Utilizes a city vehicle to fulfill essential job functions.
11. Completes any other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
To successfully perform this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A valid Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement is required.
- High school diploma or equivalent is necessary.
- Ability to comprehend and adhere to safety protocols and operational guidelines.
- Successful completion of a drug screening and background check is mandatory.

Skills Required:
- Strong communication skills to read and interpret policy documents and safety regulations.
- Basic mathematical skills for operational tasks.
- Critical thinking abilities to follow multi-step instructions.

Work Environment:
This position involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions and exposure to loud noise levels. The role requires physical activity, including lifting and moving heavy objects, and may involve standing, walking, and climbing.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds regularly. Specific vision abilities required include distance vision and peripheral vision.
