Job Summary

This is a leadership position that plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and secure operation of South Dakota's correctional facilities. The Deputy Director of Prisons will provide strategic guidance and oversight to correctional facilities, offender services, and emergency management, while upholding public safety and promoting successful reentry of offenders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership support and oversight to correctional facilities, offender services, and emergency management
  • Design, develop, and apply principles of strategic planning to ensure compliance with operational standards and achieve program goals
  • Collaborate with other divisions and the Director of Prisons to enhance Corrections programs and keep SDDOC at the forefront of progress in corrections
  • Supervise Wardens in assisting with achieving their statutory authority in the operations of their facilities
Requirements
  • Experience leading a correctional facility or system
  • Experience implementing corrections best practices
  • Experience developing and implementing correctional policies and procedures across multiple programs within a facility or correctional system

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing staff, finances, and complex organizations in a progressive, consistent, and efficient manner. They will also possess excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver the South Dakota Department of Corrections' vision and compel a variety of audiences.
