POSITION TITLE: Addictions Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: Harbor Light

REPORTS TO: Unit Supervisor

DEPARTMENT MISSION

The mission of our department is to deliver exceptional, professional services to each client, utilizing established policies and systems to facilitate substance abuse treatment and support the Harbor Light Center in fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army.

PROGRAM/CLIENT ENVIRONMENT

Clients participating in The Harbor Light Program may exhibit a range of challenging behaviors. Employees are expected to respond appropriately within the treatment context of the facility. Conduct, including attire and interactions with clients, must align with the therapeutic environment.

OUTCOMES

Individuals facing chemical dependency issues will receive comprehensive services for themselves and their families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide substance abuse treatment services, including individual, family, couples, and group counseling.
  2. Deliver individual and/or group counseling to clients with addiction and related challenges, adhering to unit policies and procedures; may serve as an intake worker as needed.
  3. Collaborate with clients to develop, review, and update treatment plans; prepare case summaries for consultation, and create aftercare plans for discharge and referrals.
  4. Engage in networking with other Salvation Army programs and external agencies to enhance treatment options for clients.
  5. Actively participate in a multidisciplinary team approach and milieu therapy program.
  6. Attend staff meetings and contribute to unit staff committees.
  7. Maintain records in accordance with policy and prepare necessary statistical and other reports.
  8. Be flexible to work on either of the two shifts, as shift assignments may change periodically.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports directly to the Unit Supervisor. In all duties related to this position, the individual represents The Salvation Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

Evaluation will be based on the effectiveness and efficiency of achieving the outcomes of this position, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of assigned goals.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Certification as a Certified Addictions Counselor (CADC) in the State of Illinois is required; if not certified, the individual must obtain certification within two years of hire.
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Two years of experience as a Counselor is preferred.

POSITION LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • Maintain communication with the Unit Supervisor regarding all critical issues related to responsibilities.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures in executing the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position requires light physical activity, including the ability to walk up two flights of stairs and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment and PCs is necessary to perform essential functions.
  • The work environment is primarily an office setting with a low noise level.
  • Must be capable of working with clients who may have poor social skills, mental health issues, and substance abuse challenges.
