Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mental Health Clinician to join our team at the University of California San Francisco. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide direct social services to patients and their families on the inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consultative and direct care to patients outside the inpatient psych unit with regard to legal proceedings around involuntary admission and treatment.
  • Conduct rapid and comprehensive individual social assessments, interviewing patients and members of their support system to identify problems and determine appropriate interventions.
  • Evaluate family, home environmental, and financial conditions in planning for continual and after-care plans.
  • Collaborate with community care providers and initiate referrals to community resources.
  • Facilitate psych-social assessments for patients in areas outside psychiatry.
  • Coordinate and participate in treatment planning activities, facilitating clinical strategies to help patients accomplish identified treatment goals.
  • Provide clinical information to the members of the multidisciplinary treatment team to establish an appropriate treatment plan.
  • Develop and implement initial discharge plans in the patient's individualized treatment care plan on admission to the inpatient psychiatric unit, and revise as needed throughout the course of stay.
  • Investigate and document probable cause and evidence for continual involuntary admissions, throughout the hospital.
  • Represent in probable cause hearings as needed, and coordinate writ hearings per patient request.
  • Provide teaching and clarification to patients and families regarding involuntary hold, conservatorship, confidentiality, and competency laws, and patient rights and appeals processes.
  • Pursue and coordinate prompt filing of necessary holds and/or conservatorship petitions to facilitate recommended continued care for patients.
  • Provide early discharge planning assessment and coordination of discharge services, interviewing patients and their families/support systems to determine effective treatment and after-care plans and to facilitate timely discharges.
  • Collaborate with community and managed care providers to determine after-care needs and to advocate for patients to receive appropriate services in a timely manner.
Requirements
  • Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, nursing, human development, or other related health field.
  • Relevant post-graduate education (18 months/27 units) from an accredited college or university may be substituted if the curriculum is comparable (developmental theory, psychopathology, clinical theory).
  • Current BLS for the health care provider certification, issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Physical ability and flexibility to participate in physical restraint of patients.
  • Strong theoretical base in developmental, systemic, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language without difficulty.
  • Training in aggression management.
  • Annual safety training.
  • Department-specific training.

  • Second language skills.
