Position Title: Outside Buyer

Job Overview:

The Outside Buyer plays a crucial role in engaging with current and prospective suppliers within designated territories, including demolition contractors, scrap merchants, auto recyclers, and construction sites. This position is responsible for driving the procurement of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

The Outside Buyer actively seeks out new scrap sources to foster relationships that facilitate the acquisition of various metal grades. Acting as the primary liaison for the organization, the Outside Buyer collaborates closely with the General Manager and facility managers to ensure that purchases align with production needs and the overarching buying strategy for the area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain strong customer and supplier relationships.
  • Negotiate pricing and contracts to enhance and sustain the supplier network.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of costs related to ferrous and non-ferrous material purchases, alongside current market trends to implement effective pricing strategies.
  • Evaluate freight costs, handling, and processing of materials to optimize supplier pricing while achieving targeted metal margins.
  • Inspect material quality in storage to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Commercial Operational Manager and leverage resources within the Commercial Support Group for bid preparation and job costing.
  • Dedicate approximately 60% of the workweek to supplier visits and 40% to marketing and administrative tasks as directed by the Commercial Manager.
  • Provide weekly action reports to track progress and performance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing or Business is preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant sales experience or 5-10 years of experience as a metal buyer in the scrap industry.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of metal alloy testing and identification.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Windows XP, including Outlook.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical abilities.
  • Robust negotiation skills.
  • Attention to detail and precision in work.
