Job Responsibilities

The Nutritionist Associate independently evaluates nutritional eligibility of applicants/clients within program guidelines and prescribes suitable food packages.

Conducts nutritional assessments for program services utilizing the VENA technique process, analyzing food frequency history, growth patterns, weight trends, biochemical values, and medical history.

Sets dietary objectives based on assessments and provides tailored counseling to meet individual nutritional requirements. Refers high-risk cases to a Nutritionist for specialized counseling when necessary.

This position is funded solely by WIC, with annual reviews of funding availability. Employment is contingent upon the ongoing availability of grant or non-general funds.


VDH mandates all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to present documentation of immunizations or proof of immunity for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time Tdap vaccine; and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.


The Virginia Department of Health provides 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, retirement plans (including 401a Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan), along with sick, family/personal, and annual leave.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fundamental knowledge of nutrition and dietary standards
  • Proficient in conducting interviews and gathering information
  • Ability to interpret, document, calculate, and compile routine data
  • Experience in providing patient education and communicating information effectively
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with diverse patients, peers, and supervisors
  • Capability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in multitasking and prioritizing workloads
  • Proficient in using computer systems

Additional Considerations

  • Training, job experience, or coursework in Nutrition, Dietetics, food services, or a related field preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
  • Experience in obtaining blood samples/finger sticks, and measuring heights and weights of individuals
