Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Coding Specialist to join our team at Methodist Hospitals. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT 4, and HCPCS codes to patient health information, ensuring data integrity and compliance with coding guidelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coding Standards and Guidelines: Adhere to the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and maintain knowledge of official coding guidelines.
  • Coding: Apply diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information, utilizing computerized encoder and grouper, for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing.
  • Accuracy Standards: Exceed, meet, or improve coding accuracy standards, as measured by quarterly reviews.
  • Abstracting: Apply relevant elements to patient records, including admitting and attending providers, point of origin, primary service, discharge destination, and discharge disposition.
  • Coding Education Maintenance: Stay up-to-date on coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements, and complete educational credits as needed.
  • Learning Opportunity Standard: Complete a minimum of 8 educational credits per quarter to meet or exceed standards.
  • Queries: Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and complete coding and abstracting.
  • Teamwork: Contribute to departmental initiatives and review MCC and CC lists to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Departmental Expectations: Attend departmental meetings and maintain open communication with colleagues.
Requirements
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and enthusiasm for coding and data analysis.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent, certificate in medical coding, and 5 years of experience in healthcare or medical coding.
  • Standards of Behavior: Meet the Standards of Behavior as outlined in Personnel Policy and Procedure #1, Employee Relations Code.
  • Confidentiality/HIPAA/CORporate Compliance: Demonstrate knowledge of procedures for protecting and maintaining security, confidentiality, and integrity of employee, patient, family, organizational, and other medical information.
