Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Coding Specialist to join our team at Methodist Hospitals. As a Medical Coding Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of medical records, while adhering to industry standards and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coding Standards and Compliance: Adhere to the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and maintain compliance with official coding guidelines.
  • Coding and Abstracting: Apply the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information, utilizing computerized encoders and groupers.
  • Accuracy and Quality: Exceed accuracy standards, meeting or exceeding 94% accuracy, and maintain a high level of quality in coding and abstracting.
  • Abstracting and Documentation: Apply relevant elements to medical records, including admitting and attending providers, point of origin, primary service, discharge destination, and discharge disposition.
  • Coding Education and Maintenance: Stay up-to-date with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements, and complete educational credits as necessary.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues to improve departmental processes and contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
  • Departmental Expectations: Attend departmental meetings, review minutes and handouts, and maintain open communication with colleagues and supervisors.
Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required; Certificate in Medical Coding or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Considerable knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and enthusiasm for continuous learning and improvement.
  • Standards of Behavior: Meet the Standards of Behavior as outlined in Personnel Policy and Procedure #1, Employee Relations Code.
  • Confidentiality and HIPAA: Demonstrate knowledge of procedures for protecting and maintaining security, confidentiality, and integrity of employee, patient, family, organizational, and other medical information.
