Chair of Gerontology and Epidemiology
The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is on the lookout for a Chair at the associate or full professor level. This role is pivotal as we aim to enhance and expand the Division of Gerontology. A substantial and competitive start-up package will be available to facilitate the successful candidate's research endeavors and the division's growth.
The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in the field, demonstrating a commitment to transdisciplinary research, collaborative initiatives, and community engagement in the epidemiological exploration of aging and gerontology. A proven track record of securing extramural research funding and innovative ideas is essential.
As the division head, the selected individual will be responsible for fostering and advancing collaborative research within the division, department, and medical system. Additionally, active participation in teaching and mentoring graduate students and post-doctoral fellows is expected. Opportunities to instruct medical students and students from other professional schools on our health services campus may also be available.
The Division of Gerontology boasts a strong history of consistent resources and support, and we are eager to find a candidate with visionary and creative approaches to future research in aging. The division's faculty, comprising seven members, engages in ongoing multidisciplinary research and collaborations across the campus, focusing on strategies to prevent and enhance outcomes for older adults facing disabling conditions.
Faculty members within the Gerontology division collaborate extensively with colleagues across the University of Maryland Baltimore campus, which encompasses six professional schools (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, social work, and law), as well as with other University of Maryland campuses and various academic and industry partners. The division also serves as the administrative hub for the campus-wide Center for Research on Aging, the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, the Gerontology Doctoral Program, and the federally funded Research Training in the Epidemiology of Aging (T32).
Ranked first in NIH funding among similar departments in public medical schools, our department comprises 45 full-time faculty members and is recognized for its robust research programs in cancer epidemiology, genomic and infectious disease epidemiology, translational toxicology, biostatistics, preventive medicine, and health disparities and population health. We also offer doctoral programs in Epidemiology and Human Genetics, as well as in Gerontology, along with master's programs in epidemiology, clinical research, and public health.
As one of the largest departments at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, we acknowledge the unique needs of candidates involved in dual-career relationships and are dedicated to supporting the work-life balance of our faculty. Our department integrates the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion objectives of the University into its daily operations and hiring practices, aiming to attract candidates whose research, teaching, mentoring, or service has prepared them to contribute to DEI initiatives and foster an inclusive culture, particularly for underrepresented individuals and groups in higher education and research.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. and/or M.D. with experience in interdisciplinary research settings, a background in epidemiology and/or gerontology, and a demonstrated record of extramural research funding are required. We welcome applicants with nontraditional career paths due to the diverse nature of our department's work.
