Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty role in Innovative Food Systems within the Department of Food Science and Technology. This position is designated for an Assistant Professor, focusing on a blend of research and educational responsibilities (70% research, 30% teaching). The ideal candidate will be tasked with establishing a robust research and teaching agenda centered on sustainable food systems, particularly concerning proteins, carbohydrates, and other food components sourced from sustainable agricultural practices.

Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:

  • Develop a significant research program recognized both nationally and internationally, emphasizing innovative and sustainable food ingredient technologies.
  • Collaborate extensively within the department and across the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, particularly with related fields such as Biosystems Engineering and Plant Sciences.
  • Engage with Virginia Tech Agricultural Research and Extension Centers to address challenges in food production efficiency and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, fostering their academic and professional growth.
  • Contribute to departmental, college, and university committees, as well as professional organizations.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess:
1) A Ph.D. in food science, food engineering, agricultural engineering, or a closely related field;
2) Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written;
3) Proven ability to conduct scholarly research;
4) Experience in teaching and a commitment to high-quality education;
5) A strong dedication to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have:
1) A track record of successful research proposal writing;
2) Experience in post-doctoral or industry research;
3) Established relationships with industry stakeholders;
4) Knowledge of food ingredient regulations;
5) Expertise in ingredient science and food properties.
