Nurse Specialist – Oncology Care

Position Overview

The registered nurse takes on primary responsibility under general oversight for the comprehensive care, evaluation, implementation, and assessment of each patient assigned to the nursing unit, either directly or through the guidance of other staff. The RN formulates and/or updates a care plan for each patient, initiates health education and training for the patient and/or their family to promote recovery; employs teaching and learning principles to aid patients, staff, and self in recognizing the need for new knowledge and skills.

Key Competencies

1. Administers medications in compliance with established protocols (RN).

  • Confirms physician orders against the Medication Administration Record (MAR) for accuracy on each shift and continuously.
  • Maintains awareness of all actions, indications, contraindications, adverse reactions, dosages, and routes of administration for all medications given to patients.
  • Ensures that all medications are administered in accordance with the Bedside Medication Verification Policy consistently.
  • Responds to patient inquiries promptly, addressing questions about medications to the patient's satisfaction.
  • Provides oversight and assistance to LPNs with the administration of IV push medications and blood/blood product transfusions.

2. Conducts thorough physical and psychosocial assessments of assigned patients (RN).

  • Completes nursing databases and physical assessments within eight hours of admission, identifying care requirements. Makes necessary referrals based on assessments.
  • Initiates a patient care plan within 8 hours of admission. Establishes appropriate nursing diagnoses, interventions, and measurable outcomes in collaboration with the physician, patient, and family. Communicates the care plan to other healthcare team members.
  • Documents the evaluation of the patient's adherence and response to the therapeutic regimen as required.
  • Updates the patient care plan to reflect changes in the patient's condition.
  • Communicates relevant patient information to the physician to obtain appropriate care orders.
  • Reports significant patient care data to the Clinical Coordinator.

3. Demonstrates the skills and knowledge necessary to provide quality care services for specific age populations, including pediatric and geriatric patients (RN).

4. Implements and monitors suitable nursing care to meet patient needs. Evaluates patient responses to the care provided (RN).

  • Participates in nursing shift reports, providing accurate and complete information on each patient.
  • Establishes priorities appropriately, delegates tasks, and follows up on the completion of assigned work.
  • Conducts physical assessments for each assigned patient on every shift.
  • Performs direct patient care and documents care, treatments, responses to care/treatment, and events occurring during the shift.
  • Identifies pertinent patient information and communicates as necessary to the physician, including critical results, changes in patient condition, patient and family concerns, diagnostic results, and clarification of orders.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Accepts, accurately documents, and ensures correct transcription of physician verbal orders.
  • Ensures all orders are initiated by conducting periodic chart and Meditech reviews throughout the shift.
  • Demonstrates computer literacy and competency in order entry and chart review.
  • Coordinates scheduling of tests and procedures effectively.
  • Maintains adherence to infection control measures, including wearing personal protective equipment as per policy.
  • Responds to patient requests in a timely manner, addressing questions about patient condition as appropriate.

5. Engages at the unit level to support unit operations (RN).

  • Participates in unit staff meetings.
  • Successfully completes all required educational courses as assigned within established timelines.
  • Adheres to attendance and punctuality policies.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental dress code.
  • Utilizes sign-in/sign-out documentation for meals or breaks consistently.
  • Participates in unit-based performance improvement data collection as needed and in unit-based improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Reviews unit and hospital communications routinely, including electronic and paper formats.
  • Ensures that computer data entries are complete and accurate.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all records (patient/employee).
  • Ensures appropriate use of equipment utilized in patient care; ensures that malfunctioning equipment is tagged for repair.

6. Contributes to the healthcare education needs of the patient and family (RN).

  • Assesses patient educational needs and utilizes educational programs for teaching.
  • Documentation reflects the implementation of the teaching plan.
  • Documents evaluation of patient and family understanding and areas of inadequate comprehension.
  • Revises education to reflect current patient status.
  • Utilizes appropriate resource persons and documents referrals.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Current CPR/BLS certification is required.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school and current RN licensure in the State of Maryland.
  • One year of prior experience in Med/Surg Nursing within the last five years.
  • RNs administering chemotherapy must complete the Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course.

Physical Requirements

  • More than 75% of work time will involve pushing, pulling, stretching, bending, and walking.
  • Must be able to hear normal sounds amidst some background noise.
  • Must have the ability to use a standard computer keyboard and be able to read a computer screen and differentiate colors.
  • Routinely lifts objects weighing under 50 pounds.
