Department Manager Job Description

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is seeking a full-time Department Manager to support all aspects of the retail operation while providing specific oversight of a specialized department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as an expert in their designated area, taking ownership for merchandising, production results, quality control, and overall operation of the area.
  • Support goals for financial results, including sales growth and increased average sales.
  • Complete required reporting; support the inventory process.
  • Understand all store functions (sales, donations, textiles, and wares).
  • Operate as manager on duty.
  • Act as a leader in safety through following procedures.
  • Train and provide day-to-day assistance to associates and provide feedback to the Store Manager.
  • Help manage overall flow and inventory of donated, new, and seasonal goods.
  • Merchandise store effectively through displays, timely features, and end caps.
  • Promote exceptional internal and external customer service through effective communication.
  • Maintain a responsive and respectful demeanor with others within the organization.
  • Demonstrate a regard for Goodwill assets.
  • Live Goodwill values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A High School degree (or its equivalent), but an Associate's or higher is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of retail or other relevant experience.
  • The ability to lift 40 pounds (and occasionally up to 80 pounds).
  • The ability to stand, bend, lift, and reach for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in a retail and warehouse/backroom setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with retail concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • The ability to provide oversight to employees (supervisory experience is preferred).
  • The ability to effectively communicate with customers.
  • The ability to set and achieve goals through prioritization and organization of tasks.
  • A sense of urgency to address customer needs.
  • High ethical practices and exceptional decision-making skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently; the ability to follow all safety rules.
  • A proficiency in computer skills including internet operations and Microsoft Word, Excel; and Outlook.
