Job Description and Position Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Electro-Optics Department Head to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The successful candidate will lead a multi-disciplinary team in the development, integration, and evaluation of high-performance electro-optic systems and sensors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of engineers and scientists in the development of electro-optic systems and sensors
  • Perform engineering work related to electro-optic and infrared systems
  • Develop and lead proposals and projects to advance the state of the art in electro-optic systems and sensors
  • Provide project updates to sponsors and stakeholders, and present research findings at conferences
  • Interact and collaborate with program management, sponsors, and stakeholders to ensure project success
  • Develop and maintain relationships with manufacturers, system integrators, and government sponsors
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives and collaborate with engineers in other technical areas
  • Plan, staff, and execute programs to ensure departmental staff are appropriately tasked
  • Foster a collaborative environment across the department, division, office, and ARL
Requirements
  • Minimally requires a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, plus 5 years of related experience
  • Expert knowledge of electro-optical system development, hardware, software, and signal processing
  • Experience supporting DoD acquisition and/or sustainment programs
  • Demonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientists
  • Excellent presentation skills and effective written and oral communication
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the application of electro-optics technologies in support of defense manufacturing and the industrial base
  • Active government security clearance
