Job Overview:


The Speech and Language Specialist will deliver assessment, therapeutic interventions, and advisory services for students aged 3-21 experiencing a range of communication challenges.

Services may be rendered on an individual basis, in small groups, or within classroom environments. The Specialist collaborates as part of a multidisciplinary team to evaluate, place, and develop programs for all students with disabilities. This role involves consulting and working closely with both general and special education instructors. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Washington State ESA certification with Speech and Language Pathologist endorsement or eligibility to obtain
  • Master's degree in Speech Pathology
  • Positive performance evaluations

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • A solid academic foundation in speech pathology and audiology.
  • Capability to conduct assessments and formulate suitable IEPs and therapy plans.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations concerning students with disabilities.
  • Respect for the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Effective time management skills and adaptability to the role's demands.
  • A positive and enthusiastic approach to working with students.
  • Experience with students on the autism spectrum and those with significant disabilities.
  • Ability to collaborate with other professionals effectively.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and managing necessary documentation.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging with students in various settings.
  • Familiarity with in-classroom service delivery models.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
  • Consistent attendance and punctuality.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands outlined here are essential for performing the key functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill these functions.

Mobility: While executing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods, push or pull weights of 18-26 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, and use hands for typing and handling tasks.

Communication: The employee must be able to engage in conversations and perceive various sounds. Effective communication in person and via telephone is essential. Specific vision capabilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Lifting: The employee should be capable of lifting or moving up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 26 lbs., including overhead lifting. The employee may need to respond quickly in emergencies or during student supervision.

Work Environment: The characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Physical Hazards: The employee may be required to work outdoors in a variety of temperatures, ranging from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F. Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions may occur, and the noise level in this environment is moderate.

Completion of Safe Schools Web-Based Training is mandatory as a condition of employment.

Application Process: In-District staff must complete an internal online application by the specified closing date.

In-building/In-district staff will have a designated period to apply for a vacant position through the online application system.

After this period, if an in-building employee qualifies for the position, the principal will extend an offer.

In the event of multiple in-building applicants, the position will be offered to the most qualified and senior employee.

If the position remains unfilled after the designated period, it will be offered to the qualified, most senior in-district applicant, if available.

Teachers with a summative evaluation score of 1 or 2 are not eligible to transfer unless agreed upon by the District and Association.
