Job Summary

The City of Torrance, CA is seeking a highly skilled Engineering Technician I to join our Community Development Team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting the City's geographic information systems (GIS) and GIS databases. You will utilize standard GIS tools and generate standard GIS products, including maps. Your primary focus will be on GIS data creation and maintenance to support departmental and City-Wide geographic information systems capabilities.

Perform routine technical duties in maintaining and supporting the City's GIS and GIS databases.

Focus on GIS data creation and maintenance to support departmental and City-Wide geographic information systems capabilities.

Requirements

Equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
One to two years of experience in civil engineering or related drafting work, surveying work, or customer service/permitting work.
Vocational training in drafting or computer-aided design and drafting is desired.
Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with ArcGIS desktop or ArcGIS Pro.
Working knowledge of basic principles, practices, and techniques of GIS applications, cartographic principles, and design and database management gained from formal training and/or work experience.
Demonstrated skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail.
Ability to organize and maintain efficient files and records.
Be familiar and comfortable in utilizing computers and new technology.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
A high degree of initiative and resourcefulness.
Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.
Ability to effectively handle multiple projects and constantly shifting priorities.
Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro is highly desirable.
